Reviewer:Martin I Resnick, M.D. (University Hospitals of Cleveland)
Description:The ninth edition of Campbell-Walsh Urology is a welcome addition to this rapidly changing specialty, particularly with the new surgical and technological developments. These are very appropriately addressed in the text, the excellent figures, and the online video that clearly demonstrates the many evolutions occurring in the field. The text also addresses basic science, diagnostic and medical advances that impact the treatment of these patients. This edition is a significant update from the eighth edition and Dr. Wein and his editors and many contributors are to be congratulated for their obvious efforts.
Purpose:The four-volume text addresses both the surgical and medical aspects of urology. All areas are appropriately covered and the material has clinical implications for all caring for this patient population. Without doubt it will be a ready reference in medical and personal libraries worldwide. It is the only book broadly covering the specialty in such a comprehensive manner.
Audience:Although the book will likely be used as a reference by practicing urologists, it will also be used for urology residents and fellows in training. Other physicians caring for urology patients (e.g. primary care physicians, gynecologists, and others) will find many parts of this book to be of value in treating their patients.
Features:All aspects of adult and pediatric urology are covered. The material is up-to-date and relevant and should be of interest to all caring for these patients. Basic science material is provided, whenappropriate, that solidifies the diagnostic and treatment programs reviewed. The abundant use of figures, the available CD, and an e-edition only adds to the value of the book. Its use will be widespread.
Assessment:This ninth edition is a high quality book that provides useful information for practicing urologists as well as those studying the basic science and technology impacting on the specialty. There are no competing books. Without question, this is a significant update from the eighth.
