I am a non-tradional college senior with a 3.9 cgpa! Thanks to this book, I actually understood the ideas and concepts after trying to read them over and over! It helped me to consult the dictionary FIRST then go to the textbook. Now one knows what to look for.It is also wonderful just to gain knowledge from--says my neighbor. I highly recommend it to anyone trying to understand philosophy OR philosophers!
Widely acclaimed as the most authoritative and accessible one-volume dictionary available in English (and now with translations into Chinese, Korean, Russian, Italian, and Spanish underway) this second edition offers an even richer, more comprehensive, and more up-to-date survey of ideas and thinkers written by an international team of 436 contributors. Includes the most comprehensive entries on major philosophers, 400 new entries including over 50 on preeminent contemporary philosophers, extensive coverage of rapidly developing fields such as the philosophy of mind and applied ethics, more entries on non-Western philosophy than any comparable volume, and increased coverage of Continental philosophy.
This new edition of a one-volume dictionary of philosophy features expansions in standing entries and the addition of some 400 new ones across the entire range of the subject (including selective coverage of a number of living philosophers, mostly thinkers in their mid- sixties or older). It covers not only Western and European philosophy, but also African, Arabic, Islamic, Japanese, Jewish, Korean, and Latin-American. In addition to major philosophers, entries include rapidly developing fields such as the philosophy of mind and applied ethics (bioethics, environmental, medical and professional). Audi is Charles J. Mach Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, U. of Nebraska at Lincoln. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
