Synopsis

While visiting Tommy’s Aunt Ada at Sunny Ridge nursing home, Tuppence encounters some odd residents including Mrs. Lancaster who mystifies her with talk about "your poor child" and "something behind the fireplace."

When Aunt Ada dies a few weeks later she leaves Tommy and Tuppence a painting. Tuppence is sure she has seen the house in it before, a recognition that takes her on a dangerous adventure involving a missing tombstone, diamond smuggling, and a horrible discovery of what Mrs. Lancaster was talking about.

Annotation

A duty visit to Tommy's elderly and unpleasant aunt results in a strange inheritance, black magic--and danger for Tommy and Tuppence Beresford.

Biography

Agatha Christie is nearly synonymous with upper-class British mysteries, for good reason. She set the standard for the genre in over 60 novels and dozens of short stories, also creating two classic detectives: the fastidious Belgian, Hercule Poirot, and English spinster Jane Marple. No one could match Christie's knack for weaving clues into her stories, then turning the whole thing inside out -- shocking her readers every time.

January 12, 2008: I thought that this book would be about a simple kidnapping, but true to Agatha Christie plots, it had some huge twists! It wasn't at all what I though it would be, but I ended up loving it like I love all Christie books!
