This book offers a clear, straightforward approach to Buddhism in general and awareness in particular. It is about being awake and in touch with what is going on here and now. When the Buddha was asked to sum up his teaching in a single word, he said, "Awareness." The Buddha taught how to see directly into the nature of experience. His observations and insights are plain, practical, and down-to-earth, and they deal exclusively with the present. In Buddhism Plain and Simple, Steve Hagen presents these uncluttered, original teachings in everyday, accessible language unencumbered by religious ritual, tradition, or belief.
It doesn't get any plainer or simpler than this. Zen priest Steve Hagen explains it all for you, so you can be a candle unto yourself.

October 26, 2009: I found the clarity and basic approach very inspiring. It supports views I had acquired from other readings. It cut through the ritualized verbage. For me it was captivating. I am not a student of Buddhism so I can not attest to its accuracy. It was simply what I wanted; a philosophy for living within the range of what I can know. It told me that I must seriously attend to the events in my world for enlightenment. I am a moment in a universe of moments, but it is my moment if I awaken to experience. Perhaps Steve Hagen will assist you in awakening.

October 03, 2009: I am new to the teachings of Buddhism and was looking for somewhere to start. This book focused on the core of Buddhism which is awareness and what that means to Buddhist's. At times I was a little confused but these teachings are new to me and ultimately I have a clear understanding. The book was a good start and I am looking into further readings on understanding the Buddhist path.
