Description:This is the second edition of a book on brain imaging from the highly regarded Case Review Series covering several radiology subspecialties. The aim of this series is to educate readers through core knowledge, question-and-answer case studies.
Purpose:The book uses hundreds of case studies to challenge readers on a full range of topics in brain imaging. With new cases, new coverage of MRA, CTA, and MR spectroscopy supplemented by excellent images, this edition is a concise, economical, and user-friendly tool for self assessment and oral board/CAQ preparation.
Audience:The target audience includes radiology residents, fellows, and practicing radiologists. The book provides an excellent selection of cases for sharpening diagnostic skills in the challenging subspecialty area of neuroradiology. The emphasis on differential diagnoses and pertinent radiological findings in a case review format is particularly relevant for board preparation and review.
Features:The cases are grouped into "Opening Round," "Fair Game," and "Challenge" sections, based on three different levels of difficulty. The randomly organized cases are presented as unknowns with three to four questions on the right-hand page, with the diagnosis, answers to the questions, additional commentary, and references on the flip side left page. Blank space is available for note taking. The 600 state-of-the art images effectively complement and support the text. The second edition includes 170 new cases and over 50 new diagnoses, with a greater emphasis on differentialdiagnosis. It also covers MRA, CTA, MR spectroscopy, functional imaging, tractography, perfusion, and diffusion.
Assessment:Although this is not a substitute for reading a traditional neuroradiology residency level text, such as those in the companion Requisites series, this would be a very good resource for radiology residents to assess their knowledge base and prepare for board examinations. This is an easy to read and cost effective study tool, an essential part of a series embraced by a majority of residents in training.
