Reviewer:William Miles, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This psychiatry review is one of 10 in the Blueprints series for medical students. The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose:The purpose is to serve as a review for medical students currently on their psychiatry rotation or who are studying for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 2 or 3.
Audience:It is targeted to medical students currently on their psychiatry rotation or studying for USMLE exams, as well as psychiatry residents.
Features:Each of the 18 chapters reviews a major topic in psychiatry, such as mood disorders, psychotic disorders, antidepressants, legal issues, etc. Each chapter is pleasantly succinct, emphasizing the main pertinent points. Each chapter contains key points, summarizing the important concepts of each chapter. References end each chapter and 75 USMLE style questions, accompanied by full answers and explanations, are found at the end of the book. Numerous tables and high quality illustrations are scattered throughout. There is a list of abbreviations is at the front of the book and an index in the back.
Assessment:The Blueprint series is well known in medical education. This latest edition reviewing psychiatry is particularly good due to its succinctness. Students, ordinarily overwhelmed with the amount of material they are expected to read, will find the brevity quite appealing. The major points of psychiatric medicine are covered, without errors. I will recommend this review book to my students.
