      Synopsis

Part of the highly regarded Blueprints series, Blueprints Psychiatry provides students with a concise review of what they need to know in their psychiatry rotations or the Boards. Each chapter is brief and includes pedagogical features such as bolded key words, tables, figures, and key points. A question and answer section at the end of the book includes 100 board-format questions with complete rationales. This edition includes new images, more USMLE study questions, and a Neural Basis section for each major diagnostic category.

A companion Website includes a question bank and fully searchable text.

Reviewer:William Miles, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This is the fifth edition of a psychiatry review that is part of a series of review books for medical students. The fourth edition was published in 2006.
Purpose:It is intended to provide medical students with a thorough yet compact review of psychiatric medicine for their psychiatry clerkships and for preparation for the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) . Although there are numerous similar review books, these remain worthy objectives, and the authors meet them.
Audience:The book is specifically targeted to medical students currently on their psychiatry clerkships or who might be studying for the USMLE.
Features:Each of the 18 chapters is devoted to a specific topic. The epidemiology, clinical features, and management of the various disorders are reviewed. Numerous tables and some good-quality illustrations highlighting important concepts appear in most chapters. Key points at the end of each chapter summarize important information. New to this edition is a neural basis section, outlining the known pathophysiology for each major diagnosis. A practice exam composed of 100 USMLE-style questions, complete with fully explained answers, is included at the end of the book. References are provided, as is an index.
Assessment:This is an improvement over the fourth edition, which I also reviewed. The artwork and color schemes are better, the text is updated, and the new neural basis section is certainly welcome. The Blueprints series has a fine reputation among medical students for its succinctness and organization, and thisfifth edition for psychiatry will not disappoint them.
