    Synopsis

From internationally best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith comes the seventh novel in the phenomenally popular and endlessly charming series that began with The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Once again Botswana's only female detective, Mma Ramotswe, and her invaluable assistant, Mma Makutsi, puzzle out the mysteries of life while finding comfort in steaming mugs of bush tea.

Danger hits close to home when a cobra is found in Mma Ramotswe's office. Of less immediate danger, but greater general interest, are the faulty blood pressure measurements being recorded at the local clinic. But perhaps the biggest mystery is why Mma Makutsi's fiancé has missed their usual dinner date. Is he discontented? And if so, will cramming her feet into a pair of fashionable blue shoes help Mma Makutsi find happiness? Full of subtle wit and charming characters, Blue Shoes and Happiness is another unforgettable gem from McCall Smith.

It was a shrewd idea to get the veteran actress and audiobook prize winner Lecat to perform this version of Smith's latest mystery starring the unforgettable Botswana detective Precious Ramotswe. Lecat is a native South African who grew up hearing the authentic accents of women just like Ramotswe, and she gives the character the perfect notes of a real person rather than slipping into caricature. Indeed, Lecat has as good an ear for the ethnic turf covered as the author does. She is also adept at making other female characters, such as assistant detective Grace Makutsi, different but immediately believable. It's Grace who has the title's passion for fancy footwear-in spite of her being a secret feminist afraid of letting her boyfriend know about her politics. Smith does mix in small measures of danger and mystery, but the overall feeling is one of a pleasant dream, of gentle wonder that such people can exist in a conflicted world. And Lecat is the perfect choice to read the story. Simultaneous release with the Pantheon hardcover (reviewed online). (Apr.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    Biography

Law professor Alexander McCall Smith had already written more than 50 books before inventing the heroine for his No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series: Precious Ramotswe, the only female P.I. in Botswana. The books are as unconventional as their good-humored heroine, who relies on common sense -- and a few tidbits gleaned from Agatha Christie -- to solve her cases.

May 24, 2009: Having just completed this book and the one which follows I've become a fan of my favorite character, the lady who can find happiness in a pair of new shoes, a "dazzling" pair of shoes. Although the main character and owner of the Detective Agency is the ultimate in serenity, common sense, sensitivity, a "teacher" of the beauty and appreciation of nature and those who inhabit it, the one who I follow with the greatest interest is the assistant lady detective. Whether she is challenged by a shoe misfortune, unrequited love or just the ups and downs of life she tackles and confronts her life with a range of reactions from patience to impatience, thoughtfulness to thoughtlessness but always redeeming herself, her inner goodness and strength obvious to the reader. She is the one I've enjoyed rooting for as she overcomes her many disadvantages and stands up to those who would put her down. Mr. Smith's skillful writing turns her into more than just another person who overcomes. She has originality and for me an attraction that keeps the pages turning and a curiosity about her future.

Good addition to an awsome seriesby Anonymous

April 19, 2007: Thie is a wonderful new book of a great series. The author paints a lovely picture of Gaborone and the surrounding areas. This book is a great to read after a busy workday. It reminds one to relax, have a cup of tea, and enjoy the company of family and friends. However, this book seemed to add litte to the main character development and movement along their life paths. The childen were hardly mentioned and few cases were solved. But, overall, lovers of the series will love this addition for the wonderful writing style of Alexander McCall Smith and and a chance to revisit the world of the Ladies #1 Detective Agency
