    Synopsis

Wren Valere's job is driving her crazy. She's still Manhattan's most sought-after Retriever, but after last year's deadly confrontation with the Silence, all this magic-user wants is a break. With her apartment going co-op and her relationship with the demon P.B. putting stress on her romance with partner Sergei, is Wren finally ready to settle down to a more stable existence?

    Not likely.

Because when you're good, trouble always finds you. Wren's next assignment puts her on the wrong side of a child-snatcher--and a collision course with her past. But to save a friend--and protect her future--Wren must pull off the most important Retrieval of her life...and for once magic isn't on her side.

    Biography

Despite being second-generation editorial and third-generation writer, Laura Anne still didn't know better, going from college (double major, English and history) to a job in the publishing industry in 1989. Specifically, to an editorial assistant position at G. P. Putnam. She quickly moved over to her first true love, genre publishing, and stayed there for 15 years, clawing her way up the corporate ladder until the end of 2003, when she decided that it was time to put more energy into her own writing.

Laura Anne had taken the first plunge into murky writing waters in 1994, when she submitted her first story to a professional market. An almost immediate sale to Amazing Stories made her think that this writing gig thing was easy. She didn't make another fiction sale for more than a year, which taught her humility and patience. And the fine art of perseverance.

Another sale did eventually follow, and then another, and another, until she was at the point mentioned above where the move to full-time writer seemed logical. Since that first sale, she has written or cowritten four media tie-in novels (Quantum Leap: Double or Nothing; Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Visitors; and Deep Water; and Poltergeist: The Legacy: The Shadows Between), while her short fiction has been published in the magazines Realms of Fantasy, Oceans of the Mind, and ChiZine: Treatments of Light and Shade in Words, and the anthologies Did You Say Chicks?, Powers of Detection, and Murder-by-Magic, among many others.

She is also the author of a number of nonfiction books for teenagers, and coedited the anthologies OtherWere: Stories ofTransformation andTreachery & Treason. Staying Dead is her first original novel, with the second, Curse the Dark, scheduled for July 2005. She is also under contract for a young adult fantasy trilogy for Harper.

Mediocre Conclusion To the 'Retriever' Series.by dalnewt

October 16, 2009: This conclusion to the 'Retriever's' series is satisfactory but unremarkable. There's too much internal dialogue and self-analysis and not enough action. The primary plot, (which revolves around P.B. and notes/papers concerning his creation), isn't really developed. Instead of focusing on the conflict with the descendants of P.B.'s creator, a good two-thirds of the book recounts endless doubts and problems Wren and Sergie are individually experiencing. Plus, there's no definitive conclusion to their romance. Personally, I prefer actual conflict to internal strife, and I dislike a semi-romantic series which ends on a tenuous note. When compared with the other novels in this series, (especially 'Bring It On', 'Free Fall' and 'Burning Bridges'), this book falls well short of their mark in terms of urgency, action and pace. If you're a dedicated 'Retriever' fan, then reading this final installment is probably worthwhile; however, if you're trolling for a new read, I suggest you skip this book.

I Also Recommend: The Outlaw Demon Wails (Rachel Morgan Series #6), Dying Bites, Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter Series), Vicious Circle, Rosemary and Rue.

    Such a treat!by Oh_Yeah_Buddy

May 05, 2009: I love all the Retrievers novels, but this one just had a little something extra. There were several strings of conflict, as there usually are, but Wren seemed more human than ever in this one, and I found it very easy to relate to her. It's such a shame Laura will be putting the Retrievers on hold for awhile, but at the same time, I'm sure anything by her is worth the read. So, read on! In the meantime, I highly recommend "Angel on my shoulder, Demon in my ear" if you like regular people mixed up with irregular beings!
