Blood Moon, by A.W.Gryphon, is a wonderfully engaging story that will pull you in and become incredibly believable. Gryphon has woven a love story,a mystery,a timeless tale that all readers can relate to into an intriguing storyline that not only is readable to anyone, it is close enough to real life for a witch to read and be able to enjoy without having to self-edit untruths. There are no hocus pocus, lightning bolts from fingertips, love spells or cackling within these pages. The first thing that struck me was how seamlessly the ideas and ritual of being a witch are explained in the story itself. The main character, Amelia, starts out as a young girl and her story quickly changes from just a day to a drama that follows her throughout her life. This is not just about a story about being a witch. Gryphon has provided enough twists and turns to keep even the most clever mystery reader guessing the outcome. The best mysteries are those that connect all the story's threads and leave you wanting more. Blood Moon is certainly that sort of story. I would recommend reading this book. It is a great escape, as fiction should be. It is also wonderful to read a book full of what we witches already know in our lives: spellwork, balance, the power of history and the connection between what is and what will become. Blood Moon by A.W. Gryphon, belongs on every witch's bookshelf. It is not everyday that a book can be a work of fiction and still have such strong ties to reality in it that I find myself feeling pulled into the story because of the familiarity of the subject. Especially since the subject is witchcraft.

A brief history of witches and the burning times sets the stage for the modern day fulfillment of an ancient prophesy when a girl child, "The One" would be born during the proper planetary alignments. Under a Full Blood Moon, she would come into her full powers, capable of uniting black and white witches. After her mother's brutal murder during a Mabon ritual, Amelia Pivens and her father moved to London in order to start a new life but stronger forces were at work. After the premature death of her husband, Amelia learns several uncomfortable truths about The Organization, a fundamentalist group devoted to wiping out practitioners of the Craft. With the death of her father, Amelia discovers a trusted family friend is not what he appears and with the Full Blood Moon fast approaching, members of The Organization are shadowing her every footstep. Calling upon a childhood friend for aid, Amelia must sort out friend from the many foes who want to destroy or manipulate her while coming to terms with possibly being the long prophesied "Ultimate Power". First in the Witches Moon series, this puts a slightly different spin on the witchcraft genre while maintaining a credible degree of believability. Strong character development and a host of antagonists keep the storyline moving at a steady pace. There are a number of minor editing errors that may give pause as they sometimes require rereading to understand exactly what is meant but don't let that deter you from discovering Gryphon's work.

Rating: 4 Angels Blood Moon by A.W. Gryphon is a tale of tragedy, love, mystery, betrayal, and destiny. The past has well and truly shaped Amelia and Blood Moon deftly explores how fighting fate is a fruitless battle. She is a character that at times I struggled to like but always found intriguing. The supporting characters were strongly written and the byplay between them kept me guessing right up until the very end who would betray her. A.W. Gryphon is a practicing witch and uses Blood Moon as a vehicle to educate the reader in a manner that is subtle and effective. After a bit of a slow start Blood Moon took off and I found myself unable to put it down. The mystery was gripping and watching Amelia walk that fine edge between light and dark had me holding my breath at times. Sinister characters, a plot where past and future collide, and that keen razor's edge of anticipation that A.W. Gryphon holds the reader on make Blood Moon a book well worth reading.
