Description:This is a comprehensive description of the gross and microscopic findings in the normal urinary bladder, and of the wide variety of inflammatory, metaplastic, reactive/reparative, and neoplastic changes that occur in this site.
Purpose:The book is written by three well known and highly respected genitourinary pathologists to assist other pathologists in becoming familiar with a wide range of pathologic bladder conditions, and to provide up-to-date information about recent developments in staging and grading bladder carcinoma, newly described variants of urothelial carcinoma, and new findings concerning bladder microanatomy.
Audience:It is of most value to pathologists in training and for practicing pathologists, but there is much in this book that is of interest to urologists and medical oncologists as well.
Features:The book describes and illustrates normal bladder histology, and variants of normal. It goes on to describe metaplastic, hyperplastic, and reactive changes in urothelium, followed by descriptions of other changes in flat urothelium, including urothelial "atypia", dysplasia, and carcinoma in situ. There is a detailed discussion of the background, relevance, and microscopic criteria for the newly accepted WHO grading system for papillary urothelial neoplasms. The section on staging urothelial carcinoma is enhanced by helpful illustrative diagrams. Numerous histologic variants of urothelial carcinoma are described and nicely illustrated. Reactive, metaplastic, premalignant, and malignant glandular lesions, squamouslesions, forms of cystitis, tumor-like lesions, and the numerous mesenchymal proliferations, benign and malignant, that occur in the bladder are described and illustrated. The book could hardly be more complete. The section on cystitis could have been presented earlier in the book, perhaps after chapter 1. Despite the fact that a CD-ROM with abundant color images is included with the book, more color photomicrographs in the book itself would have been welcome.
Assessment:This is a very complete, helpful, and authoritative description of the pathology one is likely to encounter in the urinary bladder. It is an excellent addition to the library of anyone involved in the care of patients with these disorders.
