    Synopsis

In John Meaney’s follow-up to the much-acclaimed Bone Song, a cop in a morbidly lush necropolis crosses the barrier between life and death to avenge the murder of his lover—a woman whose heart now beats in his chest.…

Tristopolitan police lieutenant Donal Riordan returned from the dead for one purpose: to stop the killer who took not only his life but his reason for living it. But first he must penetrate a secret cabal known as the Black Circle, whose stranglehold on the city’s elite is preparation for a magical coup d’état fueled by a sacrifice of unprecedented bloodshed. At the center of this ring of evil is the man responsible for his lover’s murder—a man Donal has already had to kill once before.

Amazing Dark Fantasy Crime Fictionby dalnewt

May 30, 2009: This amazing sequel to "Bone Song" captivates and enthralls. The sophisticated, fast paced, multi-threaded police-crime plot tempted me to read it in a marathon sitting; but the wondrous macabre imagery, bizarre denizens, creepy technology and mysterious zombie physiology caused me to savor each page. Resurrected police detective Donal Riordan is compelling as he, (with help from cops, mages and various non-humans including wraiths), attempts to break up a conspiracy to discriminated against, disenfranchise and kill all resurrected zombies, including Riordan himself. In the process, Riordan hopes to track down and kill the remaining members of the "Black Circle" responsible for his lover's murder and his own death. This thrilling novel is a haunting and fascinating combination of solid police procedure, compelling mystery, and gothic science-fiction/horror. I can't recommend this book enough and await the next installment of this simply marvelous series. If you have a fondness for macabre fantasy and/or unique crime fictiion, then you can't go wrong with this book and its predecessor "Bone Song".

I Also Recommend: The Way of Shadows (Night Angel Series #1), Turn Coat (Dresden Files Series #11), Deathwish, Bone Song, Ghost Road Blues.
