    Synopsis

Birdscapes -- Get ready for the most groundbreaking entry to date in the best-selling Birdsongs series (more than 400,000 copies sold!). Birdscapes delivers an immersive birding experience never before seen—or heard—in any book. For the eyes: seven elaborately engineered, full-color pop-ups portraying dozens of bird species in diverse North American habitats, from the Alaskan Tundra to a Southeast swamp. For the ears: extended recordings of the birds' calls and songs in stereo from the collection of the world-renowned Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. For the serious birder: scientifically accurate illustrations of the birds and moving text about their fragile ecosystems. This beautifully crafted volume is a visual and audio delight!

    Gr 5 Up

With marvelously detailed pop-up spreads and high-quality sound, this look at various avian ecosystems is absolutely spectacular. Double-page sections depict the environmental characteristics and native species of the following North American habitats: the Sonoran Desert; a Pacific seabird colony; an eastern deciduous forest; the Arctic tundra; a cypress swamp; grasslands; and the Pacific rain forest. The paper sculptures, filled with colorful and realistic renderings of flora and local birdlife, are accompanied by a soundtrack of the species' calls and songs recorded (in stereo) from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Macaulay Library collection. Brief paragraphs call attention to each scene's visual and aural highlights, while a fold-down flap presents a chart that identifies the birds by their location in the picture and on the recording. Additional information about the habitats and species is appended. This sonorous, if pricey, selection provides a breathtaking entry into the world of birding, and might find a place in libraries that cater to museum and science educators.-Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal

Great book for bird lovers.by Anonymous

February 23, 2009: The only thing lacking in this fun and educational book is the quality of the pop-ups. They do not fully pop-up and in general are a little frustrating. One has to actively hold the book open (to the point of fearing that the book will tear) to see all the features and even at that some features are not clearly unfolded or visible. The pictures are great, the mechanics faulty.

February 11, 2009: This book was beautifully designed from the pop-ups to the sounds. All family members loved it from grandma to my 4 yr old.
