    Synopsis

Drawing from the collection of the world-renowned Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Bird Songs presents the most notable North American birds including the rediscovered Ivory-billed Woodpecker in a stunning new format. Renowned bird biologist Les Beletsky provides a succinct description of each of the 250 birds profiled, with an emphasis on their distinctive songs. Lavish full-color illustrations accompany each account, while a sleek, built-in digital audio player holds 250 corresponding songs and calls. In his foreword, North American bird expert and distinguished natural historian Jon L. Dunn shares insights gained from a lifetime of passionate study. Complete with the most up-to-date and scientifically accurate information, Bird Songs is the first book to capture the enchantment of these beautiful birds in words, pictures, and song. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, located in Ithaca, New York, is a nonprofit institution focused on birds and whose mission is to interpret and conserve the earth's biological diversity through research. The Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab is the major source of sound recordings of birds for research, education, conservation, the media, and commercial products.

A great book for anyone who has ever wondered what bird they are hearingby TrainYardBull

August 01, 2009: My wife and I have a number of bird feeders in our yard and more than a few birds. However, matching a bird call to a particular bird isn't often easy. Now, thanks to this book with its recorded bird calls, we have matched most of the birds in our yard to their songs/calls, with many pleasant surprises. For many years we have heard a bird call with a tropical sound and wondered if some exotic bird had escaped and was living in our neighborhood. We have now placed that bird call with the Pilated Woodpecker, a Crow-sized bird with a tall crimson crest which we have enjoyed watching for many years. Several of our neighbors have been impressed with our sudden knowledge as well. I would like it better if the bird calls were a little quicker to scroll through and the birds listed were a mite easier to locate in the printed portion of the book, but I really don't know how it could be much better for the rather reasonable cost. Great book. Highly recommend!

June 17, 2009: I purchased this book for my 5 year old who is very interested in the birds in our yard and this book holds his attention for quite awhile. The people he has shared it with ( 56 year old neighbor and 66 year old Grandpa) now both want it. I'll be purchasing a second copy for Father's Day!
