August 22, 2009: I expected MUCH more and much better from Berlitz.

The book covers probably every single cruise ship and cruise line in the world. It has pictures and descriptions.

However, the book is very inaccurate in its descriptions of at least the ships I have been on. It gives incorrect names of lounges, wrong description of rooms, etc. While providing basic general information, his attention to detail is quite poor. Additionally, for most classes of ships within a cruise line, he copies and pastes, basically repeating word for word the description of each ship in the class.

The author is British and writes his reviews from a snooty perspective, how many ships might be suitable for American tastes, but lack the distinction he expects on a formal cruise. Many of his comments about staff can sound, let me be polite, euro-centric. He disparages the staff from Indonesia and the Philippines and compares them very unfavorably with European staff. He is not a fan of sugar in packets in the dining room.

On a humorous note, while the author seems to think less unfavorably about Holland America cruises, he mocks passengers on some other popular American lines. He says they are poorly dressed, worse than the staff, and clutch plastic sports bottles of water. Yet, in a photo from a Holland America ship, sure enough, the people are dressed in casual comfortable clothes and carrying water bottles.

The book is an easy read. If you want a laugh, and you are familiar with contemporary American cruising, this book may be OK. If you are seeking practical information on which to base a vacation decision, please, do not depend on this book. You will have a great vacation on many of the ships he mocks.

No, I do NOT recommend this book.

July 26, 2009: We are planning a cruise for next year and find this book excellent....... and have used it extensively to pare down which lines to use.
