Synopsis

Somewhere in South America, at the home of the country's vice president, a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of Mr. Hosokawa, a powerful Japanese businessman. Roxanne Coss, opera's most revered soprano, has mesmerized the international guests with her singing. It is a perfect evening -- until a band of gun-wielding terrorists breaks in through the air-conditioning vents and takes the entire party hostage. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different countries and continents become compatriots.

Without the demands of the world to shape their days, life on the inside becomes more beautiful than anything they had ever known before. At once riveting and impassioned, the narrative becomes a moving exploration of how people communicate when music is the only common language. Friendship, compassion, and the chance for great love lead the characters to forget the real danger that has been set in motion and cannot be stopped.

After selling her first story to the Paris Review while still in college, Ann Patchett was steadily publishing her poignant, award-winning novels by her early 20s. In fact, her first novel sold 24 hours after it had been sent out. From the fantastical Bel Canto to the heartrending memoir Truth and Beauty, Patchett's precocious beginnings have blossomed into a major literary career.

November 11, 2008: Reading Patchett's writing is so wonderful. I savored every sentence, every word. This story is so unexpected, so wonderful. This book is literature, not just a book for the beach (although this book would be good EVERYWHERE). Patchett is brilliant - she gives you enough details to set the stage, but it is in the small nuances, the unexpected belly laughs and her ability to make you fall in love with the characters that makes me give this book the highest of ratings. I can't say this enough, settle in somewhere cozy and enjoy this gem of a book!

January 23, 2008: Bel Canto is lyrical and sophisticated, but this book, which seemed very promising at first, just didn't pull it off for me. The author's style could be humorous and engaging, but at times it was 'loopy' and dull. Patchett does a good job of getting psychologically into some of the characters, but the rest of the story turned out flat and unrealistic. The epliogue was the worst of all - the writer totally went off on a new thing, which was confusing and unecessary. The ending of the book was inevitable, I thought - the characters couldn't keep going on in this blissful half-life - it had to end sometime, as foreshadowed by Gen and Messner. However, Bel Canto has some beautiful and unexpected content to offer, and the theme was clear in delivering its message. Recommended, but Bel Canto doesn't truly live up to its name in the literary sense.
