    Synopsis

Oliver is having the frizziest, loopiest, clumpiest bad-hair day ever. His family tries to help control the mess, but nothing works -- not water, not brushing, not even hair clips. And today is class picture day! How will Oliver survive?

    Annotation

After many unsuccessful attempts to control his unruly hair one morning, Oliver and his family think that they have solved the problem--until he gets to school and finds that it is school picture day.

    Children's Literature

This silly book, (that's good silly, not bad silly), must be read aloud to be thoroughly enjoyed. Oliver arises one morning and discovers during his morning routine that he has (drumroll)--BEDHEAD. That's hair that's been mussed during sleeping and is totally out of control. Oliver's whole family gets into the routine to try and fix the problem. They use water, spray, mousse and pins to try to tame the red, curly stuff, but to Oliver's vocal dismay, nothing seems to work. It is finally decided that Oliver will wear his ball cap to school, only when he arrives he discovers it's picture day. Ms. Oppenheimer, his teacher announces that Oliver may not wear his hat in the picture. As the photographer begins to count to three, Oliver removes his hat and is amazed that his hair is in place, that is until the photographer reaches the count of three. Suddenly, all hair breaks loose. The resultant photo is not what most parents have in mind for a class photo. This clever book is enhanced by the cartoon-like drawings of its characters and the child-like semantics and sound effects of the text. Students will ask for it at Read Aloud time, again and again. 2000, Simon & Schuster, Ages 4 to 8, $16.00. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger—Children's Literature

    Biography

Margie Palatini comes from a family with a history of bad hair days -- from her father's fickle, feathery strands, to her brother's downright scary spikes, to her son Jamie's own big, bad bedhead, which inspired this follicly challenged story. She is also the author of the wild and woolly Piggie Pie!, the just plain knotty Moosetache, and the hairy hunk of a tale, Ding Dong Ding Dong. She and her family live in New Jersey....They wear a lot of hats.

April 05, 2006: I'm currently working on my Masters in Education, and always looking for a book that can grasp the attention of a child and this book did it. I read it and I loved it then I read it to a 2 year old, two 5 year olds, and a nine year old. They were so into it and could not wait to see what was going to happen next. The illustrations were magical.

October 07, 2001: I first read this book in a store in the mall out loud, and ended up reading it to a child who wanted to listen. He was probably eight years old, and he just laughed and laughed. This book is so funny, and I know first hand that children will love it.
