August 30, 2007: This is a thoroughly researched and yet very readable book on the Battle of Marianna, Florida. This little known engagement was fought on September 27, 1864, at the climax of the deepest penetration of Confederate Florida by Union troops during the entire Civil War. The author tells the story with great attention to detail, but doesn't get so lost in the facts that he forgets to share the emotions of the event as well. He looks into allegations of a massacre at Marianna with the sharpness of a serious historian, but also displays true talent as a story teller by bringing the people and events to life. Overall, one of the best books on Civil War history that I've read in a long time.
