Synopsis

The Third Edition of the bestselling Basics of Qualitative Research:Techniques and Procedures for Developing Grounded Theory continues to offer immensely practical advice and technical expertise to aid researchers in making sense of their collected data. Authors Juliet Corbin and the late Anselm Strauss (co-creator of Grounded Theory) present methods that enable researchers to analyze and interpret their data, and ultimately build theory from it. Highly accessible in their approach, Corbin and Strauss provide a step-by-step guide to the research act--from the formation of the research question through several approaches to coding and analysis, to reporting on the research. Full of definitions and illustrative examples, this book concludes with chapters that present criteria for evaluating a study, as well as responses to common questions posed by students of qualitative research. Significantly revised, Basics of Qualitative Research remains a landmark volume in the study of qualitative methods.

Key Features of the Third Edition:

  • Allows for students to develop their critical thinking skills in the "Critical Issues" section at the end of each chapter.

  • Shows the actual steps involved in data analysis (from description to grounded theory) and data gathering by means of theoretical sampling.

  • Provides exercises for thinking, writing and group discussion that reinforces material presented in the text.

  • Consists of a student companion Web site that includes real data and practice with qualitative software such as MAXQDA, as well as studentpractice exercises.

Annotation

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Sharon Rogers

This book provides all qualitative researchers with the tools needed to begin a qualitative research project. While primarily directed at those interested in grounded theory, suggestions, language, and methods that could be used in a variety of qualitative research projects are included. Format is similar to the 1990 edition, but considerable revision has occurred. The purpose is to teach qualitative analysis techniques and procedures. This is not a recipe book but a set of useful tools. It is a valuable revision, as thinking about qualitative research methods and the language used to express that thinking continues to change and develop. The authors' objectives are met. The techniques and procedures outlined in this book are useful for all qualitative researchers. This book would also be an excellent reference for grant and article reviewers who have limited expertise in the language of qualitative research. It contains many excellent quotations for rebutting reviewers who want to impose quantitative methods and language in qualitative projects. The authors maintain their position as two of the most outstanding experts in their field. Corbin has done an excellent job of completing this work after Strauss' death. This book covers all areas of ""doing"" grounded theory research -- data collection, coding, analysis, and theory building. Illustrations are few but helpful. Bolding and underlining in this book assist the reader in identifying material that is particularly important. Definitions are very concise and useful. I noted no shortcomings. This book will be a useful addition to any qualitative researcher's shelf, especially the novice. It provides language that isuseful in educating quantitative researchers about qualitative research. Even those who have the first edition of the book will want this second edition. It has been heavily revised and updated to reflect new understandings of qualitative research methods.
