The lilting rhyme offers reassurance to any baby, "Baby Cakes, Baby Cakes, I love you!" Normally one would expect to see parents smooching, nibbling on feet, bouncing and hugging their little ones on their laps, but Wilson gives the traditional rhyme a little twist. He shows a variety of babies—boys and girls of various ethnicities kissing, hugging, and playing with their favorite toys, which tend to be stuffed animals. So we see a cute redhead bouncing a teddy bear and clapping, while an Oriental baby in green pajamas laughs while he reads a story to his teddy bear. It is a charming book and one that kids should enjoy having read to them quite a few times. The art is deceptively simple looking—with just a few strokes and water colors, Wilson is able to depict each of these babies and their emotions.

Biography

Karma Wilson is the author of the best-sellers Bear Snores On and Bear Wants More, both illustrated by Jane Chapman, and One Day in the Middle of the Bog, illustrated by Joan Rankin. She lives just outside of beautiful Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

Sam Williams is the author, illustrator, and designer of numerous picture books for young children. Some of the books he's lent his talent to include the Bunny and Bee series, Cold Little Duck, Duck, Duck by Lisa Westberg Peters, and Pea Pod Babies by Karen Baicker. He recently put down his paintbrushes and took up the challenge to climb Mount Blanc! Sam lives with his family in Hertfordshire, England.
