Reviewer: Rosanne R. Griggs, BSN, MS, PhD, FNP-Bc(Purdue University School of Nursing)
Description: This compact book is packed with explanations of the causes of a wide variety of different cardiac and pulmonary auscultatory findings. Throughout, it references corresponding tracks on the accompanying CD, enabling users to listen to the sounds immediately after reading about the anatomical and physiologic changes associated with the sounds.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide "a practical tool to improve your ability to auscultate for these sounds and enhance your understanding of their physiology." The book combines text, illustrations, and sounds to meet these objectives.
Audience: The book is most appropriate for nurse practitioner or physician assistant students, medical residents, or any healthcare clinicians wishing to improve their cardiac and pulmonary auscultation expertise.
Features: The accompanying CD is the most valuable feature. Also helpful are pretest and post-test questions for each section, English-Spanish phrases used in cardiac and respiratory assessment, and the glossary of terms.
Assessment: As an auditory learner, I know this book would have been helpful when I studied health assessment, and that it will help me improve my cardiac and pulmonary assessment skills. Replacing the cassette tape that came with the previous version with a CD enables users to readily locate specific sounds. The illustrations in this edition are much improved, in color and detail, as well.
