VOYA

Covering all of North America from prehistory through the present, this volume is organized by chapters with many useful subheadings and cross-references to guide readers toward the information they seek. The writing is sophisticated, intended for senior high and adult readers. In his preface, the author urges non-Indian readers to be mindful of "the often neglected Indian perspective and [to] empathize with contemporary Indian concerns." To this end, he includes information about contemporary Indian activism as well as American and Canadian governmental policies. Throughout the book, numerous maps illustrate ideas in the text and emphasize how integral Indians are to the entire North American continent. Drawings and black-and-white photographs further supplement the text. Over a third of the book consists of seven fascinating appendixes. These include a detailed chronology from circa 35,000 B.C. to the year 2000; lists of Indian Nations and their locations and languages in the U.S. and Canada; explanations of Indian place-names; and a glossary. Oyate, an organization that strives to ensure an honest portrayal of the Native American experience, includes the 1985 edition of this book on its Web site (http://www.oyate.org) list of best reference books, noting that it needs updating. According to the promotional material, this revised edition has new and revised maps, a new glossary, an updated bibliography, and has been revised throughout to take into account recent archeological discoveries and current information about "political and cultural developments in Indian affairs." This is a very well-designed book, a bargain for any library. Glossary. Index. Illus. Photos. Maps. Biblio.Chronology. 2000, Facts on File, 385p, $45. Ages 15 to Adult. Reviewer: Rebecca Barnhouse
