The Atlas of Urinary Cytopathology is a generously illustrated and user-friendly volume that serves as a desk reference and a practical guide in the diagnostically challenging are of urinary cytopathology.
The text is comprised of 500 high-resolution color images that thoroughly illustrate the important aspects of the cytopathology of urinary tract disease. Complete coverage of urinary cytopathology is provided; in addition to full coverage of non-neoplastic lesions, benign and borderline neoplasms and urothelial carcinoma, chapters include normal cytology, uncommon primary neoplasms, upper urinary tract lesions, and metastatic and secondary cancers. Selected images of the histopathologic characteristics of the lesions are also included for morphologic correlation, making this text attractive to both cytopathologists and surgical pathologists.
Nationally recognized experts in urinary cytopathology and histopathology provide authoritative analysis of every aspect of urinary cytopathologic analysis.
Reviewer: Fang Fan, MD, Ph.D(University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: With high-quality images accompanied by detailed explanatory legends, this atlas of urinary cytopathology uses the same format of the atlas that preceded it, Atlas of Pancreatic Cytopathology with Histopathologic Correlations, Ali et al. (Demos Medical Publishing, 2009).
Purpose: "The authors hope that this atlas will "guide those involved in traditional morphologic diagnosis of urothelial cancer and other malignancies of the bladder and upper urinary tracts." It uses a comprehensive, integrated approach to diagnostic urinary cytopathology and successfully meets the authors' objectives. "
Audience: Routine urinary cytology is a primary part of the daily cytology workload. This atlas meets the needs of all professionals in cytology, including cytotechnologists, cytopathology fellows, and cytopathologists.
Features: This atlas encompasses the whole spectrum of urinary pathology from normal urothelium, reactive conditions, infections, hyperplasia, benign and borderline urothelial neoplasms, urothelial atypia, urothelial carcinoma, to uncommon primary neoplasms. A separate chapter covers cystoscopic characteristics of urinary tract lesions. The atlas ends with a chapter on upper urinary tract lesions and a chapter on metastatic and secondary cancers. In order to be good cytopathologists, we must have a good understanding of the corresponding histology. Each chapter begins with histologic images of the lesion followed by corresponding cytology pictures. All images are of the highest quality, and the legends are detailed and cover characteristic diagnostic features, diagnostic clues, and potential pitfalls. Histologic follow-up diagnoses are often provided in the legends of cytological images, enhancing the atlas's practical aspects. The atlas also covers ancillary studies, mainly immunohistochemical stains. The authors do not discuss the utility of the Urovision test in urinary cytopathology, and I understand this is beyond the scope of this book, but readers like me would certainly appreciate the experts' view of the future of molecular diagnostics in urinary cytopathology.
Assessment: The book is physically appealing with a very organized format and beautiful illustrations. It is a pleasure to read such a high-quality book. It will prove to be an invaluable resource for surgical pathologists, cytopathologists, pathology trainees, cytotechnologists, and urologists dealing with urinary pathology.
