Synopsis

Completely updated for its Fourth Edition, this atlas provides detailed, step-by-step instructions on procedures performed in the neonatal intensive care nursery. In an easy-to-follow outline format, with more than 450 drawings and clinical photographs, the book presents clear, current information on indications, preparation, technique, precautions, and how to avoid potential complications.

More than 150 of this edition's illustrations are in full color. New chapters cover transcutaneous bilirubin testing, auditory screening, relocation of a dislocated nasal septum, management of natal and neonatal teeth, and lingual frenotomy.

An accompanying DVD (by Alfonso Vargas, III, MD) provides seven videos: umbilical line placement, paracentesis, PICC placement, venous blood draw, endotracheal intubation, endotracheal intubation, part II, and sterile gown and glove. The DVD also includes three animations: exchange transfusion, emergency evacuation of air leaks, and endotracheal intubation.

Reviewer:Jay P. Goldsmith, MD (Tulane University School of Medicine)
Description:This is the fourth edition of a spiral bound atlas that provides step-by-step instructions in telegraphic prose on procedures performed in the neonatal intensive care unit. Over 50 procedures are covered, from fundamental intravenous access to the extremely complex such as ECMO cannulation. This revision updates the 2002 edition and features a significant number of color illustrations as well as a DVD of videos of seven procedures and animations of three others.
Purpose:This is intended as an illustrated instructional guide on procedures commonly performed by neonatologists, pediatricians, and nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit which cannot be found in standard neonatology texts. Over the four editions of this atlas, its scope has expanded to include the informed consent process, complications of procedures, and additional procedures including physiologic monitoring. This edition includes four new sections, including transcutaneous bilirubin monitoring and auditing screening. The authors have set very high goals and for the most part have achieved their objectives.
Audience:This is a "must have" resource for all providers who work in neonatal intensive care units and should be available as a reference on every unit. The audience includes neonatologists and pediatricians (especially hospitalists) , pediatric residents and neonatal fellows, NICU nurses, and nurse practitioners. The editors are well known authorities in neonatal medicine; although many of the contributors are junior faculty or even residents at George WashingtonUniversity, they obviously have been closely supervised and their contributions carefully edited.
Features:The atlas starts with a section on preparation and support which includes brief chapters on informed consent, methods of restraint, and analgesia and sedation. It then covers approximately 50 procedures in separate sections organized by the type of procedure. Each procedure is described by indications, preparation, technique, precautions, and potential complications and the spiral binding allows the book to lay flat. The book contains 450 pictures and illustrations, many of which are in color. The illustrations and pictures (including x-rays) are particularly helpful, extremely well done and clearly reproduced. Other than the first chapter, the prose is in outline form and cryptic.
Assessment:This is a unique atlas that has become a "must have" reference for every provider in the NICU. This edition continues the improvement over previous editions with the addition of a well done DVD companion and beautiful color illustrations. There is no comparable text in the field.
