Description: This volume in the Surgical Techniques Atlas series covers an unusually wide range of breast surgical techniques, with lavish color illustrations and access to accompanying video.
Purpose: The purpose is to help trainees and practicing surgeons in their "review and preparation for surgical procedures." The wealth of new procedures in this book will benefit even the most experienced breast surgeons.
Audience: Written for surgical trainees, general surgeons, breast surgical specialists, and surgical oncologists, the book thoroughly covers the entire field of breast surgery. It also will be of value to plastic surgeons who do breast reconstruction. The editors and chapter authors are all preeminent authorities in their field and, in most cases, are the surgeons who developed and perfected the techniques.
Features: The book considers various surgical techniques ranging from the simple (aspiration of a breast cyst) through the extremely complex and rare (forequarter amputation). It is unique in its balanced coverage of procedures commonly done by surgeons but not often included in surgical atlases (e.g., stereotactic biopsy). It is lavishly illustrated with color photographs and diagrams. The book is well organized and includes indications, clinical anatomy, and steps in the procedure (as bulleted lists). Access to an accompanying web site provides additional material, including videos.
Assessment: This is an excellent addition to the library of anyone who does breast surgery. I would recommend it to even the most experienced surgeons because of the wealth of new procedures and the clarity with which they are illustrated. It will be as valuable to trainees, because of the clear explanations of even the most basic procedures.
