Description:This manual, an update of the 2004 edition, is a comprehensive resource for the assessment of communicative disorders.
Purpose:The purpose is to "provide students and professionals with a variety of information, materials, and procedures for use in the assessment of communicative disorders." The authors have succeeded in providing a detailed collection of assessment and diagnostic information for a wide range of speech and language disorders.
Audience:The book is geared toward both emerging clinicians and experienced professionals in the field of speech-language pathology. The wide range of assessment tools and useful reproducible materials make this an excellent resource for everyone in the field. It would also be a useful text for instruction in assessment and diagnostic procedures classes at colleges and universities.
Features:An overview of assessment and evaluation considerations is provided, followed by chapters about specific communicative disorders. Sources of additional information are listed at the end of each chapter, including assessment tools and Internet links. This edition features a new chapter on literacy including the role of the speech-language pathologist, normative information for reading and writing development, and the assessment of phonemic awareness, reading, writing, and spelling. There is also expanded and updated information on pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders, fluency disorders, and apraxia of speech. The book is well organized and is written in a clear and understandable style with color-coded chaptersfor ease of navigation. The inclusion of various types of testing procedures, materials for obtaining assessment information, as well as for interpreting and reporting the information, makes this a well rounded resource for beginning clinicians, experienced clinicians, and students. The supplemental reproducible materials are an added bonus.

April 20, 2001: This is an excellent, functional book on assessment and is useful of individuals at all levels within the profession. It is a great reference and provides norms and information regarding assessing special populations.
