Synopsis

From prominent authorities in the field, the revised and expanded second edition of this acclaimed work is an essential resource for anyone providing treatment services or conducting research in the area of trauma and PTSD. The volume reviews the breadth of current knowledge about trauma assessment and provides clear, up-to-date recommendations for practice. Coverage encompasses the uses of standardized measures, clinical procedures, epidemiological methods, and projective techniques, as well as approaches to evaluating specific survivor populations. Existing chapters have been fully rewritten and seven entirely new chapters added, addressing recent developments in classification; emerging applications of neuroimaging and pharmacological probes; legal and forensic issues in assessment; assessment of comorbid PTSD and substance abuse; and effects of trauma on physical health.

Annotation

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Kelly Dineen

This book addresses the assessment of PTSD, psychological reactions to trauma, and the manifestations of trauma in special populations. The topics include the use of standardized assessment measures to assess PTSD and traumatic reactions and assessment in special populations (e.g., the medically ill, multiethnic populations, and families, children, and couples). The authors have developed a reference of standardized measures and assessment techniques used in trauma populations and with individuals diagnosed with PTSD. The growing interest in the area of PTSD specifically, and in the psychological sequelae of trauma more generally, has led to the development of numerous assessment instruments. The authors attempted to bring together the conceptual, empirical, and psychological advances in the field for the use of clinicians and researchers. The editors and authors meet this goal and address important issues in special populations. This book was written primarily for practitioners and researchers already familiar with the area of PTSD and trauma. The editors and authors are all credible authorities who are directly involved in the either research or clinical work in this area. This book contains separate subject and author indexes. The chapters vary in their use of tables, with some providing excellent graphs and tables. In general the references across chapters appear comprehensive and current. This is a good reference volume for those working with trauma populations. It provides a critical review of the measures available in the literature and also addresses important clinical and research considerations for special populations. The rationale for organizing the chapters intothe three sections is somewhat unclear and the reader may need to move between chapters for a complete discussion of an area of interest. This would be a good reference a graduate psychology library.
