August 22, 2009: My personal library of knot books contains over thirty books by various authors. I am also an author of a knot book. Nevertheless, 99% of the time the knot book I use as a reference is The Ashley Book of Knots. This is THE authoritative book on knots. There is nothing better available!
Barnes & Noble asked me to write a review because of my recent purchase of The Ashley Book of Knots. This is my second personal copy of the book and replaces the copy that I purchased about twenty years ago. The binding on my first copy has come apart to the point of no longer being useful. This is not a reflection on the quality of the binding, but the continued use that I have subjected the book to over the years. This book is a great read! I love it.If you like to tie knots, this is THE book to add to your library.there is more here than knotsby Anonymous

May 03, 2004: This is not just an encyclopedia of knots. The knots are good, but there's more here than knots. Mr. Ashley describes how to tie knots, the advantages and disadvantages of different knots used for the same purpose, which materials work or don't work for which knots. These aren't just knots for sailors. He tells why you can't use any old knot to tie up your camel, how to tie a mattress on your car, and how to improvise a bicycle tire with clothesline. He tells about the people who taught him knots and how they used them. He tells funny stories about knots used cleverly or foolishly. I love the history of a time when knots were a lot more important than they are now, a time before bungee cords and adhesive tape and store bought key chains and shrink-wrapped pork chops. It would be a poorer world if this technology and this history were lost. I've spent many happy hours browsing in this book, and it's one of the few i've read over and over.
