The literary revelation of source and title to the exhibition, Ashes and Snow, by artist and author Gregory Colbert. Ashes and Snow: A Novel in Letters is the fictional account of a man who, over the course of a yearlong international journey, composes 365 letters to his wife. The interior pages, filled with typewritten journal entries to his wife, are printed on custom printed Italian deckle-edged paper and fastened with a sewn-binding. The cover of the novel is made from dark brown Nepalese paper coated with beeswax, bound by two matching thin-waxed chords. A sliver of natural bamboo defines the exterior flap. There are no photographic images in the novel.

As Good or Better Than the Images
Los Angeles, a first-time reviewer, 04/26/2006
I was first struck by the images by Gregory Colbert while perusing a magazine. When I saw the corresponding exhibition, Ashes and Snow, I was floored. The novel only heightened and added deeply rooted, even mythical, layers to my experience. This literary component of the Ashes and Snow experience is my favorite aspect of the whole. It is poetic, filled with longing, wonder and hope. If you are someone who can imagine feelings and turn them into vivid photographs and afterimages of your own heart's memories, I recommend this book and commend you.
