Ten thousand years ago, humans and fairies fought a great battle. When the fairies realized they’d never win, they moved their civilization underground and hid. All the families agreed, except the demons.
The demons planned to lift themselves out of time until they were ready to wage war on the humans once more. But the spell went wrong, and they were catapulted into Limbo. Now the spell’s deterioration is accelerating and the demon materializations are erupting. Even the fairy scientists cannot predict the next one.
But someone can. Artemis Fowl, teenage criminal mastermind, has solved temporal equations that no human can. So when a confused and frightened demon pops up in a Sicilian theatre, Artemis is there to meet him. Unfortunately, a second mysterious party has also solved the equations and has managed to abduct the demon.
Once again, Artemis will pair up with his old comrade Captain Holly Short, to track down the missing demon, before the spell dissolves completely and the lost demon colony returns violently to Earth.
Eoin Colfer is the New York Times bestselling author of the Artemis Fowl series; The Supernaturalist; Eoin Colfer’s Legend of Spud Murphy; Eoin Colfer’s Legend of Captain Crow’s Teeth; The Wish List; and his latest book, Half Moon Investigations. He lives in Ireland with his wife and two children.
Eoin Colfer has many gifts, but the invention of memorable characters must be near the top of the list. Artimis Fowl was great to begin witha wealthy twelve-year-old criminal genius capable of kidnap, extortion, theft, and much worse; in fact he was capable of anything at all if it would help to restore his mother to sanity. Now fourteen years old and in the throws of puberty he finally discovers an intellect comparable to his own. The bad news is: the comparable intellect is competing with him. Worse, it is a girl. Worse still, she is pretty, French, just about the right age and, most important, she needs him. Add to that Holly Short, the streetwise elf cop; Butler, the supreme master of all martial arts; and a wonderful proto-demon warlock who is in love with the English language, and the stage is set. But that is only the stage. What follows is complex and convoluted and enormous fun. Lyrics from the opera Norma sneak into a demon's monologue, kids make neutrino jokes, and readers have a great time. This is the kind of book kids take to bed with a flashlight. It kept me up till two.
More Reviews and RecommendationsIn the summer of 2001, Eoin Colfer was a teacher in Ireland who had just finished up a book called Artemis Fowl -- about a boy in search of fairy gold. Colfer struck gold himself when his high-tech fairy tale starring the intrepid 12-year old "criminal mastermind" became a blockbuster bestseller that many considered to be the heir apparent to Harry Potter.

November 03, 2008:
Artemis Fowl is back (finally)! I was terrified that my favorite Irish billionaire genius teenager was gone for good because author Eoin Colfer has been publishing a variety of books in the last couple of years that had nothing to do with good old Artemis. But, fortunately, the boy genius hasn't been forgotten. He's back and more brilliant than ever in this fifth installment of the high-tech fantasy series.
As THE LOST COLONY opens, Artemis is fourteen years old and experiencing the uncomfortable pangs of puberty. While that alone is enough to keep most teens busy for a few years, Artemis has to contend with his surging hormones while trying to save an entire fairy race as it teeters on the brink of extinction. But it's that kind of multitasking that has made Artemis Fowl an international sensation.
THE LOST COLONY has all the elements that Fowl fans have come to expect, including a dizzying array of fairy-issue gadgets, danger whizzing past our heroes from a variety of sources, ingenious plans, and a bodyguard who is as loyal as he is lethal. This book also includes a few new characters who were, for the most part, likeable and fun. The one notable exception is a twelve-year-old French girl who could give Artemis a run for his money in the genius category. She is pretty, rich, and highly annoying. I often found myself wishing that one of the other characters would "accidentally" dunk her in a sewer, or shave her head, or something equally unpleasant. Is it wrong for me to have feelings of aggression toward a fictional character? No, I don't think so. And you'll understand what I mean once you read the book.
Fans of the ARTEMIS FOWL series will not be disappointed in this newest adventure. There were a few problems with the story, including some hard-to-follow descriptions of how Artemis and company escape their latest predicament, and an irritating French girl (see above). Overall, though, I found this an enjoyable book with an ending that knocked me for a loop. And, as always, I was left wondering what mischief Artemis will dream up next.

Artemis Fowl, a smart 13 year old boy is always in the mood to discover new things and go on adventures in Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony. In his recent adventure he is trying to discover a new species that lived long ago, the demons. He is not the only one trying to capture a demon. As he is about to capture a demon, his plans get ruined by a 12 year old girl that might just be as smart as him. The girl kidnaps the demon and runs off with it. Artemis his bodyguard (Butler), and their fairy friend, Holly, now have to get the demon back and stop the girl from exposing the demon to the human world. It is up to Artemis and Holly to save the demons as they are stuck on the planet world Limbo (demon world). Will they be able save the demon race or will Artemis and Holly fail?
Artemis, a 13 year old boy, is always in the mood to be on an adventure. He is smart, daring, courageous, and determined. Butler and Holy are also main characters in this book. Butler, Artemis' loyal bodyguard, is like a father to Artemis. Since the minute Artemis was born Butler was with him and has rarely left his side. Butler is strong, courageous, brave, hardworking, and has the utmost respect for Artemis. Artemis' fairy friend, Holly, helps Artemis on all of his adventures, even though fairies and humans should not be friends. Holly is what one would call a born leader. She is serious, loyal, courageous, brave, intelligent, and has any other characteristics a leader would need. Other characters that help Artemis are Foaly, Mulch, No1, and Dooh Day. Other characters that play along in the book are Artemis' mom (Angeline Fowl) and dad (Artemis Senior). The characters in this book are all important in their own sort of way.
Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony is a great book for anyone, even adults. Anyone that loves fantasies will love this book over any other books that they have read, even the people that hate fantasy/fiction books will be hooked on this book. This book has magical creatures, adventure, action, betrayal, mystery, and some funny humor that anyone will love. My advise to you is to read the book NOW. You first will want to read the books before this one in the series. If I was to rate this book, I would give it 5 stars, 2 thumbs up, or anything else that stands for excellent. So hurry down to your public library and get this book. I'm telling you, you will LOVE this book.
