September 20, 2009: I found Armageddon: The Battle of Darkening Skies to be an interesting read.
Like most people, I am a fan of many different media platforms and genres, and I feel that this book contains influences from a variety of sources. A quick glance at the book's cover might give you the impression that it is a manga comic, rather than a fantasy novel. But, the beauty of Armageddon is that while it is by and large a fantasy novel, it also infuses some characteristics of Asian manga and RPG's. All I've got to say is, it's about time that we find ninjas in a fantasy novel!!!As far as the plot is concerned, it is a fairly straightforward good vs. evil adventure story. The main character, Turim - who is half elf and half human - decides to follow in his father's footsteps and become a Knight of the Hawk to help defend his homeland against the evil Dragon Army. While on a mission to a far off island, he uncovers some evidence that his homeland is in grave danger. He then proceeds to make his way back home to give warning of the impending threat. Along the way, Turim meets up with a wide variety of characters that are willing to provide him assistance on his journey. Some of the characters found in Armageddon feel like they could have been plucked from an installment of Final Fantasy; whereas, others have roots in some of the more classical fantasy sources. This mix of characters provides a familiar, yet fresh, take on the fantasy genre.All in all, I think Armageddon: The Battle of Darkening Skies is a fun, satisfying beginning to a series of novels. It is by no means perfect, but its shortcomings can be overlooked due to an entertaining cast of characters, as well as the illustrations Mr. Tibke has inserted throughout the book.If, for nothing else, it's at least worth a quick read to find ninjas battling dragons!
