    Synopsis

A mother bird leaves her egg in the nest to go look for some food. While she's gone, the egg hatches, and the baby bird sets off to find his mother - but he doesn't know what she looks like. His search leads him to ask a variety of animals and machines, "Are you my mother?" Finally, a crane deposits him back in his nest, where his mother is waiting. Just the right amount of tension and the happy and secure ending make this an extremely popular story.

    Annotation

A baby bird, fallen from his nest, sets out to find his mother. Full-color illustrations. Ages 4-8. 64 pages.

    Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

This story has been around for forty-five years and has not lost its appeal. A little baby bird falls out of its nest and asks a number of the animals that it meets if they are its mother. Each in turns replies that he or she is not and that they are a kitten, dog, hen or cow. Baby bird is attached to a ribbon and can be removed from the nest. When he reaches the steam shovel which he calls Snort, baby bird can be inserted into the shovel as it lifts the bird up, up, up and back into its nest. There is a slot under mama bird's wing to slide the little baby bird. This cloth book will be perfect for little ones new to the story and will also engage motor skills as they try to put baby bird in all of the right places. 2005 (orig. 1960), Random House, Ages 1 to 3.

I think that this book was pretty good. I liked that little chick kept trying and trying to find it's mother!!! It asked a dog and A LOT of other animals!!! But I felt kinda bad for the little chick wouldn't you??? Think if you couldn't find your mom wouldn't you be scared??? I just know I would!!!

As a child, I was a voracious reader and lover of film as I still am. But as a child, I never bothered with the geniuses who created the books I read or the movies I watched. As a result, when I found this old book at my mom's house to give to my boy, I was surprised to find it wasn't a Dr. Seuss book as I thought it might be. Reading this again, 35 or so years later, it brought back so many memories, particularly the illustrations, and I loved it all over again, as did my son. This is a great children's book since it takes a potentially dangerous situation and tells about it in a comical way. The book leaves it up to the parents to explain to the child when he or she is ready that wandering off can lead to trouble. It also reminds the parents of this.

Also recommended: Other books I and my son have read lately that teach good behavior are - Tikki Tikki Tembo - Wonderful Stories from Skog Forest - Ten Little Bunnies - The Tale of Peter Rabbit - The Boy Who Cried Wolf - Little Engine That Could.
