    Synopsis

Dorothy P. Lathrop's ANIMALS OF THE BIBLE first introduced children to the most memorable animals of the Old and New Testaments over sixty years ago, and her extraordinary book was awarded the very first Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished picture book for children.

Now, in honor of the sixtieth anniversary of the Caldecott Medal and of its first recipient, this special edition of ANIMALS OF THE BIBLE celebrates Lathrop's award-winning collection of some of the most beautiful and appealing stories in the Bible. Dorothy Lathrop's richly detailed black-and-white drawings of the creation, Noah's ark, Daniel's lions, Jonah's "great fish", the animals around the Christmas manger, and many others bring the Bible's most fascinating animals vividly to life. A glorious tribute to a great tradition in children's literature, this special anniversary edition will be a keepsake to treasure for years to come.

This book was planned by Helen Dean Fish, who selected the accompanying texts from the King James Bible.

    Children's Literature

Detailed black and white illustrations of animals accompany Bible text in this 60th anniversary edition of the Caldecott Medal's first recipient. This approach to Bible learning focuses on the importance of animals in both Old and New Testament stories. It succeeds wonderfully as a way to draw children into learning about the Bible because of their fascination and attachment to animals. The illustrations, which are lovingly rendered, clearly show an understanding of the natural world and of the Bible. The book begins with the story of creation and ends with the "Peaceable Kingdom" passage from the Book of Isaiah. Some particularly notable illustrations include Daniel's lions, Noah's Ark, the ravens feeding Elijah and the Christmas manger scene. 1998 (orig. copyright

November 27, 2006: This book brings all of the animals of the Bible alive for children to really see. Through this tale, they are able to observe all of the different kinds of animals that lived so long ago. This book also brings the children closer to the Bible by seeing that it is really interesting to read through all of the things that one is able to find inside. The book begins with the story of creation and ends with the 'Peaceable Kingdom' passage from the Book of Isaiah on through to the end of the Bible. Dorothy P. Lathrop's ANIMALS OF THE BIBLE first introduced children to the most memorable animals of the Old and New Testaments over sixty years ago, and her extraordinary book was awarded the very first Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished picture book for children. This book would be great for kindergarten children because they would be able to enjoy the wonderful pictures that accompanies the story. This tale would fit into the informational category.
