Orwell's classic political fable is often cited as simply a condemnation of Stalinism, which it certainly was, but its political relevance is both wider and more enduring, as novelist Ann Patchett notes in her introductory essay to this new edition. Among the lessons contained in its pages is the need of politicians for "The Enemy" (think Axis of Evil) and the dangers of individuality to oppressive political order. A previous edition of this book was cited in the third edition of Books for College Libraries Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Absolutely first-rate...comparable to Voltaire and Swift. -- The New Yorker

November 22, 2009: I thought the novel Animal Farm was a great book. I think everyone should read this book at least once in their lifetimes.
This book is about a group of animals who live and work on a farm under the leadership of their owner, Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones is a drunk, abusive owner who all of the animals resent. Old Major, the oldest pig, is pushing for reform. He says that he had a dream and in that dream he saw a rebellion. He believes that this is what is in store for the animals. The will overthrow Jones and they will take over Manor Farm. It will no longer be called Manor Farm. It will be called Animal Farm. Old Major created a list of seven Commandments for the animals to follow. These Commandments are:. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.. No animal shall wear clothes.. No animal shall sleep in a bed.. No animal shall drink alcohol.. No animal shall kill any other animal.. All animals are equal. The animals choose to follow these Commandments after the Rebellion. The animals overthrow Jones. Now they need a new leader because Old Major passed away. Who will they choose to lead them? They will have to choose between Snowball, one of other pigs that live on the farm, and Napoleon, another pig. Napoleon is apparently their only choice after Snowball is chase away from the farm by vicious dogs. Napoleon isn't a very good choice to lead the animals because it turns out that he trained the dogs to be vicious. He trained them to kill Snowball. Now that Snowball was out of the picture he could do whatever he wanted. Napoleon Started to secretly change the Commandments so he could do what he wanted. The most of the animals were illiterate so they saw changes in the Commandments but were too ignorant to realize what Napoleon was doing. Napoleon was ruthless. He overworked the animals and he gave them hardly any food. He stole plans from Snowball. Those plans were to build a windmill for the farm. Nearby farms are in awe because of the situation. They are afraid and don't know what to do. The other farms try to overthrow Napoleon and his farm. They don't succeed. Animal Farm faces many problems. They can't grow enough food due to weather changes. The farm is suffering more than they ever did. Napoleon is going against Commandments. He was torturing and killing other animals. He was growing barley in the fields to make whiskey. He slept in Mr. Jones's bed. He told the animals that were suspicious that surely they had made a mistake, because when they went to look at the Commandments, it seemed as though they forgot words that in reality, appeared there over night. The rest of the pigs started to take over. Find out what happens in Animal Farm by George Orwell.Reader Rating:

November 20, 2009: What happens when you get a farm, animals, and Russia you get Animal Farm. In my opinion Animal farm was a great book and I have already read it twice. Animal Farm is based off a true story when comunism began to rise in Russia. The story Animal Farm starts off in a meeting between the animals. They begin to plot the downfall of farmer Jones because he starves and obuses them and all he does is go into town and get drunk. One day the animals were starting to die of hunger so they broke into the food shed farmer Jones came back and saw them eating and he was furrious. He got out his whip and started hitting them they couldn't stand it much longer so they chased him out of the farm and they named the farm Animal Farm. These animals made a flag and every thing and when it was time to harvest food they had so much food it could last them a whole year. Then farmer Jones came to take back his farm he brought many men with wepons and two guns it was an all out war for Animal farm. Is the book sounding good well to know what happens next you'll have to find out for your self.
