    Synopsis

Completely updated, and now in full color, this practical reference is a comprehensive guide to the anesthetic and perioperative management of patients during all procedures performed by general and subspecialist surgeons. The book explains each procedure from both the surgeon's and the anesthesiologist's perspective, presents details on anesthetic technique, and guides the anesthesiologist and surgeon through the decisions that must be made before, during, and after surgery. Emphasis is on factors that impact the anesthesiologist, including patient positioning, duration of surgery, and complications. The Fourth Edition covers almost 40 new surgical procedures, with an increased focus on laparoscopic and endovascular procedures.

A companion Website will offer the fully searchable text and an image bank.

    Annotation

    The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

    Doody Review Services

Reviewer:David B. Glick, MD, MBA (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description:This is the third edition of a unique guidebook for the anesthesiologist about what the common (and not so common) surgical procedures involve both operatively and anesthetically.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a source of clinically relevant information for anesthesiologists on a wide variety of surgical procedures. This undertaking has become increasingly important as the variety of surgical procedures has continued to increase at a rapid pace in concert with the explosion in surgical technology. The book does an exceptional job of meeting these goals.
Audience:The book serves as an invaluable resource to the practicing anesthesiologist or the anesthesia resident as a reference for cases that they may do only on rare occasions. The combination of expert surgeons and anesthesiologists writing about their areas of shared specialization provides a level of understanding that neither group could generate working alone.
Features:The book covers all facets of anesthesia practice from cardiac and neurosurgery to off-site and office-based procedures. The incredible breadth of the undertaking is made even more impressive by the depth of coverage of each of the topics, which are written in a fashion that allows each to stand on its own as a guide to the specific procedure. The protocols for preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care of the various patients are a unique compilation that provide a solid base for the person who does a specific kind of case only infrequently.
Assessment:This new edition is animportant addition to any anesthesiologist's library. The new sections on laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgeries are essential as more and more anesthesia practice involves these newer procedures. No other anesthesia book matches the presentation of anesthetically relevant surgical detail that this book provides. I found the book easy to read, well-illustrated, and a useful guide for less commonly performed procedures.
