Reviewer:Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description:Drs. Andreoli and Carpenter have given us a new edition of one of the classic medical books. Since the first edition of Cecil was published in 1986, it has been a pillar of every medical library. Dr. Andreoli's dedication of this edition to Dr. Carpenter, for whom this is the last, will elicit fond memories in those familiar with his contributions to medicine and the world. All of medicine owes a significant debt of gratitude to Dr. Carpenter.
Purpose:This is a comprehensive yet concise authority in current medical knowledge. The editors have brought together the best of the world renowned experts in their areas to organize an overview of the accepted facts of physiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Each of the classic texts of medicine has been written with a particular philosophy and this one is known for its practical, quick, comprehensive nature. This edition continues to meet that extraordinary goal.
Audience:This book is for all levels of medical personnel, from students attempting to get their arms around the extensive knowledge-bank to seasoned practitioners who wish to update their understanding or review a topic during office hours. In keeping with the underlying philosophy of comprehensiveness and practicality, the editors and subject authors have used their extensive experience to produce a truly noteworthy book.
Features:It is organized in the usual organ-system manner, but what really sets the tone are the exquisite figures, tables, and illustrations that help readers betterunderstand and remember important points. These are also available on the associated web site, making the graphics immediately accessible on the office computer. The index is most comprehensive and easy to use.
Assessment:This is a most enjoyable way to study and review the large body of medical knowledge. The book is extremely easy to use, and the graphics are superb and intuitive. It remains as a major pillar of every medical library. Thank you, Drs. Andeoli and Carpenter, for an extraordinary book, and thank you, Dr. Carpenter, for your leadership.
