Description:This update of a seminal text of osteopathic medicine begins with a concise historical background section and an explanation of the goals of osteopathic manipulative medicine before moving into specifics of each major area. The book was first published in 1991, and then in 1997. This edition adds case histories.
Purpose:It is intended to meet the needs of both teachers and students of osteopathic manipulative medicine and it quite adequately achieves that end. Considering that osteopathic manipulative medicine is generally poorly understood by practitioners of traditional medicine, this book goes far in explaining the goals and techniques used by osteopathic physicians. The decision to describe case histories adds significantly to the basics.
Audience:This is a very useful book for attending physicians and students, be they osteopathic medical students or allopathic physicians and students interested in manipulative medicine. The authors, particularly Dr. Schiowitz, are significant contributors to the specialty and are active practitioners.
Features:The major strengths of the book are the definitions of unique medical terms used by practitioners of osteopathic manipulative medicine and how the diagnosis and treatments are documented. This understanding is crucial to osteopathic medicine and the authors present this information very well. Each chapter describes the anatomy and physiology as it applies specifically to manipulative medicine, differentiating this from other standard anatomy and physiology books.Chapters outline specific manipulation techniques with descriptions that are relatively easy to follow. However, the one problem with the book is that the pictures appear a bit outdated and do not convey the different motions required of each technique. The illustrations are very good and are well known in the osteopathic community, but the corresponding text does not explain the illustrations well. The references are representative of the current literature and could be helpful in defining future research.
Assessment:This book is extremely useful for experienced practitioners who wish to review the skills of manipulative medicine and for students who are learning the nomenclature and documentation of the practice. By far, it is the most comprehensive book on osteopathic manipulative medicine available.
