Today’s biology courses place an increasing emphasis on the chemical processes that underlie critical biological functions. This text helps readers review and master all the basic facts, concepts, and terminology of chemistry that they need to understand those processes and to excel in their life science courses. KEY TOPICS: Inorganic Chemistry, Atomic Structure, Chemical Symbols, Atoms and Molecules, Ionization, Liquid Mixtures, Diffusion and Osmosis, Nerve Cells, Organic Chemistry, The Covalent Bond, Polar and Nonpolar Covalent Bonds, Functional Groups in Organic Compounds, Hydrogen Bonds, Isomers, Biochemistry, Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, Nucleotides, Enzymes, Biologic Oxidation, Photosynthesis, Oxygen-Carbon Dioxide Transport in the Blood. MARKET: For all readers interested in chemistry and biology.
This seventh edition of a workbook for beginning chemistry students majoring in biology reviews basic facts, concepts, and terminology of chemistry that are essential to an understanding of biological phenomena. Coverage encompasses organic and inorganic chemistry and biochemistry, from atomic structure through oxygen-carbon dioxide transport in blood. The material will help students most if completed during the first two weeks of an introductory biology course. An index has been added for this second edition.
