The field of prosthetics has undergone major growth in the past several decades. Bioengineering research has led to the development of prosthetic components that duplicate many of the complex functions of both lower and upper extremities. There are prosthetic feet that provide varying degrees of dynamic response and mechanical and hydraulic knee mechanisms, some computer-driven, that respond to the mobility demands of both active and sedentary clients. The author incorporates a case study approach in the presentation of the material to assist the learner with the integration of concepts. The author also includes considerations across the lifespan, with a primary emphasis on the adult with amputation. The purpose is to provide information regarding evaluation, program planning, and treatment implementation after amputation. The author explains prosthetic components, prosthetics devices, and physical therapy management strategies, including a motor control approach to prosthetic management. The book also introduces concepts related to vascular disease, diabetes, surgical procedures, and psychosocial response to amputation. Although targeted for physical therapy and physical therapist assistant students, the author acknowledges that some of the information may be beyond the scope of practice of the physical therapist assistant. The book may also be useful as a resource for faculty that wish to incorporate a case study approach in the classroom. The book contains numerous illustrations, charts, tables, and photographs that augment an understanding of prosthetic components, prosthetics, and therapeutic management. Case studies are incorporated in the text to enhance active learning and problem-solving skills. Each chapter contains current, relevant references. This is a good text for students in physical therapy and physical therapist assistant programs. It brings together a historical perspective of amputations and prosthetics with an update of the latest evaluation and treatment concepts.
