Synopsis

Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paulo Coelho's charming fable, now available in English for the first time, will enchant and inspire an even wider audience of readers for generations to come.

The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist.

The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams.

San Francisco Chronicle

A magical little volume.

November 30, 2008: I would never truly consider myself as a traveler but Paulo Coelho made me feel like I was along for the ride with Santiago, a shepherd from Spain who discovers a very thoughtfully sought fate as he made his way across a barren desert. The Alchemist almost seemed too real to fit the fictional genre due to Coelho?s great strength in the thought of his characters. The Alchemist is surely a spiritual read with lots of references to various religions throughout Spain and Africa. Although I am not much into religion myself, this book was able to teach me a lot about life and how things coincide with each other to form one greater being.
There is not much speculation on the background or physical features of Santiago, but as the novel progresses I was able to imagine him on my own. Beginning in Spain, Santiago a proud shepherd, is forced to make many decisions based on the wisdom of others and his recurrent dreams which led him to a treasure only his heart could follow. Coelho?s eloquent writing style makes the passionate dreams of Santiago come to life as he journeys through Africa to the Great Pyramids in search of treasure. Along the way Santiago is constantly reminded by several individuals that a dream is the only obligation that a person has to the world. Coelho expresses his sense of imagination with these characters by each teaching Santiago something new about the Language of the World and how it?s used to our greater knowledge.
This wonderful aspect of the novel portrays complex features of religious attributes written with captivating simplicity. Coelho uses a very powerful writing technique which combines an easy to read novel with a fascinating theme. We all have dreams like Santiago does, but we rarely sought to complete them in thought of failure. In this novel the reader learns that if someone wants something, the universe conspires to help that person make it a reality. In other words, the pursuit of our happiness will conspire to make our dreams come true. In essence with Coelho?s serious tone of voice and dialogue the novel is not all that comforting. Discovering how everything in the universe is interrelated may not be all that easy but at least Coelho did the better part of the work.
I would highly recommend The Alchemist to everyone as an additional support to our pursuit of happiness in a world filled with animadversion and despair. It?s easy to read and an inspiration to anybody who decides to pick up a copy. Coelho truly wrote a brilliant novel through his imagination of a boy who discovers what its like to drop the pressures of society to follow a dream. The Alchemist deserves a five out of five for its captivating outlook on a fictional character?s way of finding his own personal legend. Understanding the theme of the novel is only half the battle, so go read The Alchemist and find out what happens to Santiago in the perilous deserts of Africa in search of a recurrent dream.

November 30, 2008: It is no accident that Paulo Coelho?s The Alchemist has been on the NY times best seller list for 54 weeks, his gripping novel about following your dreams has earned every week.
The novel is about a Shepard named Santiago who has recurrent dreams about finding treasure at the pyramids. Paulo Coelho?s use of simple language to describe the characters, most of which do not have names, and settings in The Alchemist forces the reader to use his imagination and draw upon details from their own life experiences to fill in the blanks. This makes the characters and settings more real and relevant to the reader. Paulo Coelho?s writing style helps to support the main theme of the novel, living out your dream is the only obligation a person has to the world, The Alchemist is like a mirror that the reader can see their own hopes and dreams in, and unlike most books I have read, The Alchemist?s message is clearly supposed to be followed outside the novel.
My favorite idea of the novel is the idea that if a person wants something the entire universe conspires to allow the person?s wants to become a reality. For example when Santiago decides to follow his dream he is quickly able to sell his sheep for a good price because the universe wants him to achieve his dream. The idea of the universe being on anyone who reaches for their dream?s side is a comforting one and continually inspires me to reach for my dreams.
I think The Alchemist is an outstanding novel that should be read by everyone at least once. It is complex and deep while being written in simple language, and is a just fun read.
