Perhaps the best-loved nineteenth-century American novel, Mark Twain’s tale of boyhood adventure overflows with comedy, warmth, and slapstick energy. It brings to life and array of irresistible characters—the awesomely self-confident Tom, his best buddy Huck Finn, indulgent Aunt Polly, and the lovely, beguiling Becky—as well as such unforgettable incidents as whitewashing a fence, swearing an oath in blood, and getting lost in a dark and labyrinthine cave. Below Tom Sawyer’s sunny surface lurk hints of a darker reality, of youthful innocence and naïveté confronting the cruelty, hypocrisy, and foolishness of the adult world—a theme that would become more pronounced in Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Despite such suggestions, Tom Sawyer remains Twain’s joyful ode to the endless possibilities of childhood.

    H. Daniel Peck is John Guy Vassar Professor of English at Vassar College and is the author of Thoreau’s Morning Work and A World by Itself: The Pastoral Moment in Cooper’s Fiction.

    Biography

Riverboat pilot, journalist, failed businessman (several times over): Samuel Clemens -- the man behind the figure of “Mark Twain” -- led many lives. But it was in his novels and short stories that he created a voice and an outlook on life that will be forever identified with the American character.

    Twain's Classic Tale, unabridged - Entertaining!by CA_mom

November 11, 2009: Mark Twain knows how to tell a fun, exciting tale. I bought this for my 11-year-old boy for a chose-your-own-book report, and he loved it. I found myself reading it again. Twain tells of Tom's childhood in a series of stories, his characters are rich and colorful.

This edition is as Twain wrote it, but with an introduction, end notes that explain some of the historical contexts, and comments and questions for use in a classroom. This would be a great edition for a class or homeschoolers.

September 09, 2009: My teacher for AP World Literature assigned an "author study" project last week. I chose Mark Twain as my author, and am very pleased with his style. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is unique, wholesome, and just a completely enjoyable novel for any reader, no matter what the age. Twain demonstrates a writing style that is completely his own. I recommend this book for anyone, and it is certainly a must-read for any child!

I Also Recommend: The Man from Snowy River, The Man from Snowy River II, Hannah Montana: The Movie, My Friend Flicka, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Barnes & Noble Classics Series).
