Pinocchio, a wooden puppet full of tricks and mischief, with a talent for getting into trouble, wants more than anything else to become a real boy.
On December 25, a new live-action version of the classic tale Pinocchio, starring and directed by Roberto Benigni, will open in the U.S. Many versions of the original story by Carlo Collodi are already available, but Steerforth Press is issuing a new edition of The Adventures of Pinocchio for the occasion. Fluidly translated from the Italian by Nancy Canepa and sporting stylish line drawings by Carmelo Lettere, this should prove a tasteful alternative to the inevitable tie-in edition, and if prominently displayed could sell well over the holidays. Collodi's witty, satiric tale is much harsher than its Hollywood adaptation, and grownups will appreciate it as much or more than children. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
More Reviews and RecommendationsCarlo Collodi was born in Florence, Italy in 1826. At the age of 22, he became a journalist to work for the Italian independence struggle and also wrote comedies and edited newspapers and reviews. In 1861, when Italy became a united nation, Collodi gave up journalism and settled down as a theatrical censor and magazine editor. He then turned to children's fantasy, and in 1881 the first chapter of Pinocchio appeared in the Giornale Dei Bambini, and became an immediate success. Collodi died in Florence in 1890. Greg Hildebrandt is a well-known children’s book illustrator. He lives in New Jersey.

May 25, 2007: Parents, if you ever wanted to teach your kids not to lie, this is the book to read to them. If you can convince your children that their nose will grow to an embarrassing length if they lie, and it works, then do it since they'll thank you years later. Also, like Pinocchio, if your child has a dream, tell them that unless they are true to themselves, as in the story, it will never come true.
