The unforgettable story of young Jethro Creighton, who comes of age during the turbulent years of the Civil War, by the Newbery Award-winning author of Up a Road Slowly. "An impressive book both as a historically authentic Civil War novel and as a beautifully written family story."--University of Chicago Center for Children's Books.
Young Jethro Creighton grows from a boy to a man when he is left to take care of the family farm in Illinois during the difficult years of the Civil War.
Narrator Terry Bregy adopts an appropriately boyish tone for his reading of Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt, a Newbery Honor Book in 1965. Bregy compels readers to hear young Jethro Creighton's account of how the horrifying events of the Civil War changed life on his family's Illinois farm, even so many miles from the front lines. March 27, 2009: Across Five Aprils
Across Five Aprils, a historical fiction masterpiece, by Irene Hunt. This book is about the Civil War times. You will never know what will happen next in this book. The main character is Jethro Creighton. He is a nine year old boy who lives on the wet crops of Southern Illinois. He has a very heavy accent. Jethro is an African American with freckles and is very thin. His mother, Ellen Creighton, is small with large, dark eyes. She has very dry, black skin. She also has a southern accent, too. Matt Creighton, Jethro's father, is a very tall man with dark and dry skin. He has dark brown eyes and he is very quiet. He also has very good eye sight. The setting of this story is back in the 1960's. The place setting is on the wet crops in Southern Illinois. They live on a farm in a little old white house with five bedrooms. The house is more than 10 miles away from the nearest town. The life lesson in this book is that people have a lot on the farm. But some people don't. We have to see what we have in life and not take it to our advantage. The story has a lot of emotions in it. Like courage, power, love, caring, and sadness. The book showed me not to take things to my advantage, and to be glad for what I have in life. There were no problems until Jethro's family passed away from a disease they got from the Civil War.A young boy who hurts because of his father dying from a disease. Then his uncles come back from war and had the same disease that Jethro's father had. When they all died, Jethro realized that life isn't easy. He also finally met his grandfather for the first time. His grandfather told stories about life in the city and how his father grew up. Jethro thought about what goes on in life and what he can't take for granted. His older brothers take everything the wrong way, but Jethro did not take the same path. He now thinks about the ways he can make things better for himself. He doesn't want to follow in his brother's footsteps. He is making his own in life. This book has a very powerful impact on life because it tells what not to take for granted. I really like how the author makes you feel like you're the main character. I really wouldn't mind reading this book again. The book was very clear and easy to understand how life was back then in that time. The story was not predictable. You never knew what would happen next in the book. The ending was very sad. When this part happened I broke out into tears. I decided to give this 4 stars overall.
