In the fifth Mysterious You book, Achoo!, kids probe the secrets of illness and sniff out what germs are, why they sometimes make us sick, how our bodies battle them and how vaccines protect us against them.
Billed as "the most interesting book you'll ever read about germs," this volume provides a fascinating look at germs, bacteria, and viruses. Exactly what germs do and how the human body responds is covered as well. In addition to the main text are interesting side notes, such as how cold and flu viruses almost never enter the body through the mouth. Or that people in Antarctica don't get many colds because the viruses can't survive long enough in the frigid air to get from one person to another. Several experiments are contained also, including how to make your own penicillium mold, as well as a recipe for creating fake snot. The book includes advice on why homemade soup is good for a cold, how a positive attitude can affect the immune system, and how thousands of years ago, doctors determined what was making a person ill by covering him in mud. The illustrations are lively and suit the funny, informative writing style. 2003, Kids Can Press, Ages 8 to 12.
