    Reviewer:Robert E Neeves, Ph.D. (University of Delaware)
Description:This updated edition of the ACSM Resource Manual provides professionals with the most current physiological data, guidelines, policies, and procedures that apply to both wellness and clinical programs. Significant revisions have been made to update the 1998 edition to prepare candidates for the ACSM certification tests.
Purpose:As stated in the preface, the manual is intended to be a companion to ACSM Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2000) . Maintaining a successful and safe program or business requires meticulous attention to details surrounding safety, employees, clients, community, budgeting, facilities management, public relations, and marketing. The manual provides a ready source to consult when professionals need to identify the necessary tools for addressing these issues. To this end, the contributing authors and the editorial board have accomplished the purpose set forth in the preface.
Audience:People who use the manual include undergraduate seniors, graduate students, and current professionals employed in private, community, and corporate wellness programs as well as medical professionals practicing in clinical settings. The preface indicates that it has been written for fitness professionals and candidates who prepare for the ACSM certification tests. Based on my educational experiences and previous involvement in Phase II cardiac rehabilitation programming, the ACSM manual plays an integral part in preparing professionals for the ACSM certification test program. It addresses thespecific knowledge, skills, and activity objectives (KSAs) cited in the ACSM guidelines book that must be mastered before one can successfully complete a certification test. Without question, each of the contributing authors is a recognized expert in his or her specific discipline.
Features:The manual is a valuable source of guidelines, procedures, protocols, forms, and illustrated exercises for private, corporate, and clinical facilities personnel who work with clients and patients. It does not contain superfluous information. Each chapter is written in a brief, clear, concise style and provides only the most pertinent information to prepare professionals to successfully complete their ACSM certification tests. Extensive contemporary reference lists at the end of the chapters offer readers the opportunity to pursue a topic more deeply to develop a better understanding of the material covered. Numbered icons at the beginning of each chapter identify the level of ACSM certification to which the materials apply and the specific numbered KSA objectives extensively listed at the beginning of the manual. There are no shortcomings. Periodic reviews and updates guarantee that it remains current and that new trends and policy changes are appropriately addressed to prepare professionals for conducting successful and safe wellness and clinical programs.
Assessment:This manual continues to be an invaluable companion to the ACSM guidelines book. There are no other competitor manuals or textbooks, because the manual was created specifically to supplement the guidelines book to address its knowledge, skills, and activity objectives that must be mastered by any one who must take the ACSM certification tests. It is mandatory that a book like the resource manual undergo major revision processes at least every four years. It must reflect the most current physiological and clinical practices, policies, and procedures that are used in private and corporate wellness programs as well as clinical rehabilitation programs.
