      Synopsis

In quiet contemplation of a complex world, Berry focuses on a place or a moment. Reverence and understanding often emerge from the stillness. A small gathering of Berry's Sabbath poems were published in 1987. Now the whole series from 1979 to 1997 is collected in one book, celebrating the broad range of this vital and transforming poet.

      Book Magazine

With a mystic's knowledge of silence, darkness, awe, longing, praise and light, Berry provides spiritually renewing instruction through his beautiful contemplative verse.

May 13, 2000: This work of art expresses the cycle of life and death, and the realization that we as humans are a part of this... Berry's poems, like mantras, dig deep into the essence of humanity and the need for humans to make communities, communities sacred and whole. Berry draws upon Eastern ideas and blends them with the essence of Western thought and Christianity. His poems show the beauty and wisdom in Christianity which is often missed by the casually devout Christian. He taps into the mystical tradition, which belongs not only to the Eastern cultures, but also which is an essential element of Christianity, a beautiful environmental Christianity which is lost in Western, patriarchal, dualistic thought. Berry's words praise life and the joys of connecting with the divine in all of life... Berry taps into what is neglected in our American culture, and the essence of what could be... how we could feel sacred and tree(t) the Earth with respect...
