After her Aunt Penelope dies, historical researcher Penny Nichols is astonished to learn that not only is she a bona fide heiress-but she's also been invited to put her research skills to work. This time, the history she's researching happens to be her very own. What she discovers about Aunt Penelope-a pair of wills, double lives, secret histories, and a family tree of vultures-is about to sweep Penny and a long-lost relative across France, over the hills of Italy, and throughout half of Europe on the adventure of several lifetimes.
Belmond's debut novel combines suspense, romance and crafty wit. The protagonist is a character to cheer for, and the mystery subplot will keep readers turning the pages.

October 18, 2008: This is a romance novel, wrapped as a mystery. I read the second one (A Rather Curious Engagement) first; it was in a display case in the myster section of my local B&N. I thought it was a mystery. I read the first few pages, and then put it down, and bought something else, which I didn't like as well, then went back and bought it - and loved it. It was only as I was reading it that I looked at the classification for the book and saw that it was a romance. I tried Romance novels as a teenager, and didn't like them. These books, however, are not cute, trite or overly dramatic, and there's no bodice-ripping. They are romantic, however. And since the herione comes into money after working, most people will be able to vicariously enjoy her enjoyment at her new slightly lavish lifestyle.
I Also Recommend: A Rather Curious Engagement.

January 12, 2008: What a lovely read, delightful from page one, a page turner with charm and wit! Penny Nichols is every young woman, at least I could identify with her uncertainties. The plot twists and turns you around all the way to the end.
