    Synopsis

An astonishing and heartbreaking debut—the story of a young woman's coming-of-age and the murder that rocked turn-of-the-century America

    Annotation

In 1906, sixteen-year-old Mattie, determined to attend college and be a writer against the wishes of her father and fiance, takes a job at a summer inn where she discovers the truth about the death of a guest. Based on a true story.

    Publishers Weekly

Donnelly weaves the fictional story of 16-year-old Mattie into the events of the Gilette murder case (also the inspiration of Dreiser's An American Tragedy). "The author's ability to recast the murder mystery as a cautionary tale for Mattie makes the heroine's pending decision about her future the greatest source of suspense," said PW's Best Books citation. Ages 14-up. (Sept.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

October 17, 2009: Originally purchased for my 15-year-old daughter, I was interrested in this story because I am a third-generation Old Forge native. (The story takes place in the Old Forge area, fictionally based upon the real life murder of Grace Brown in the late 1800's.) "The American Tragedy" was the original story and countless pieces of fiction have been based around this storyline. I always felt most of them were boring because, really, it was one murder long ago and who really cares? This is the first book I have ever read that spins the reader into the people of that period: their way of life, their moral standards, who they were and how they survived.

My father is considered to be one of the great historians of Adirondacks. So I like to think I know a great deal of the local history. But reading this story was the first time I was allowed to look through the eyes of a native Adirondack girl of that period and see how Grace Brown's murder affected the community. Yet "A Northern Light" is so much more. It is a lovely piece of fiction that pulls the reader in slowly, weaving in the historical moral standards with historical facts and character development in a sweet, sensitive story line.

By the end of the book, I understood how difficult it would be to be an independant thinking woman in that time and how challenging survival was in the north country in the late 1800's. But the message of 'thinking outside of the box' is universal. The characters in this book allow the reader to see life from a different time, and still take away a fresh perspective.

It really is a great book. I cheered for the character Mattie at the end.

October 14, 2009: This book was a powerful read. In finding yourself and your voice, this book could really suit anyone facing these challenges. I loved it personally, even though I believe some might find it slow, or 'boring', it was rather enjoyable for me. Definitely something I will not forget. Mattie is so relatable and complex at the same time; you believe she's a real person, as if you've met her before, and know her well. Again, this was an inspiring read and I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for an all around comforting read.
