Synopsis

For five weeks the world waited for news about Danny Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped in Karachi, Pakistan...And then came the broadcast of his shocking murder. The complete account of his abduction, the intense effort to rescue him, and the aftermath are told here - in astonishing detail, and with courage and insight - by his surviving wife Mariane.

A Mighty Heart is the unforgettable story of two journalists who fell in love with their work - and with each other. Together, Mariane and Danny Pearl traveled across the globe, dedicated to journalism that increases the under-

standing of international politics and of ethnic and religious conflict. In the end, Danny was caught in the dangerous fissure where warring cultures, politics, and ideologies collide. A Mighty Heart is both a portrait of a partner-

ship built on the ideals of love, truth, and justice and a critical look at the methods and structure of the Al Qaeda network.

The Washington Post

Deftly written with the help of Sarah Crichton, formerly an editor at Newsweek and publisher at Little, Brown, A Mighty Heart resists the obvious peril of falling into hackneyed sentimentality. Instead of playing the part of the helpless, hopeless weeping widow while "screaming inside," Mariane Pearl is both sharp-eyed and practical, and at some points even mordantly amusing. — Jane Mayer

December 11, 2007: Even though I already knew the horrific details of the death of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, on assignment in Pakistan, the entire time I was reading Mariane Pearl's memoir, I kept hoping against hope that it would have a different outcome. Where does the kind of courage exhibited by Mariane Pearl come from? You cannot help but repeatedly ask this question as she takes the reader through the labyrinth that is not only the streets of the Karachi slums, but the bureaucratic maze she maneuvers as she searches in vain for her kidnapped husband. Reading her account leaves you hopeless about the cycle of extreme poverty and religious hatred that contribute to producing an endless supply of extremists. On the other hand, Mariane's courage and her unwillingness to live fearfully leaves you hopeful about humankind, and its ability to triumph over people who choose to carry out barbaric acts. In addition to Danny and Mariane, the third person you can't get your mind off of is Adam, the child his father will never know , the son who will never know his father. What we know about Adam, however, is that he will be raised by an indomitable mother--a woman who, like Danny, also possesses a mighty heart.

April 12, 2004: The Widow of Daniel Pearl has been a blushing bride, adventurous wife, exceptional widow, and a peaceful mother in this book about her with(and unfortunately without) Daniel Pearl. This book takes you on an emotional, sometimes incoherrent, roller coaster in the life of a journalist who was taken away from his wife and unborn son in one of the most chilling and mind-crippling way-in front of the whole world by a group of thugs. This is the true story of a true survivor who could have easily just hidden away from the truth but instead embraced it and moved on with the help of her baby and the world.
