    Synopsis

Originally published in 1724, this famous account chronicles the lives and exploits of the most notorious pirates from Anne Bonny to Blackbeard.

    Booknews

Both Robert Louis Stevenson and J.M. Barrie were inspired by this 1724 classic--the first book to introduce the world of Captain Kidd, Mary Read and 19 other pirates to the reading public. David Cordingly, author of Under the Black Flag, provides an introduction to this edition, which was taken from the third edition, published in 1925. Includes a glossary and an abstract of the 1720 civil and statute law relating to piracy. No index. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

January 24, 2007: More important than anything this is written during the Golden Age of Atlantic Piracy. This is the main book that I am using to write my senior paper. It is one of the most regarded books in it's field and for good reason. This is good for the casual history buff, or hardcore historian researching major topics.

August 26, 2003: This book is somewhat difficult to read because of the wordy rambling style of the time. But it is so interesting, though I question if all the details about every pirate is accurate. Back in the 1700's recordkeeping was haphazard at its best and nonexistent at its worse. However, this is the main source for whatever has been written about pirates since then. Captain Charles Johnson, the author, could have been a pseudonym. Historians do believe he was a seafaring man and probably knew some of the individual pirates he wrote about: Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Calico Jack Rackham, Bartholomew Roberts, Charles Vane, etc. I highly recommend this book to history buffs.
